Question

How do I optimize my drives if I have 2 drives

I've seen posts about how to optimize if I have 3 drives.

SSD#1: OS and software

SSD#2: Project and source media

SSD#3: Media CCache and Scratch

If I only have 2 hard drives however, what's the optimization?  OS and software on one and project and media on the second?

Just wondering:

What are the specs of your computer?

These are my specs.

There's no option to add an internal hard drive unfortunately.
Briefly, it's: Intel Core i7 (7th Gen) 7700K / 4.2 GHz 4200MHz, 4 cores, 8 logical processors RAM 16GB (I've since upgraded to 32GB RAM)
480GB SSD (what I use to put all my video editing stuff in)
2TB HHD

Guess what? You have run into the limitation of the SATA interface itself. If that 480 GB SSD is a SATA one, it simply cannot handle both the OS and video editing media files at the same time.

Worse, the included 2 TB HDD is only a laptop-class HDD that only spins at 5400 RPM. As such, it will struggle to even achieve 130 MB/s on the outer tracks - and that's only for reads. With simultaneous writes thrown into the mix, you'd be lucky to even achieve 60 MB/s in overall disk I/O throughput.

And although the mini-ITX motherboard supports m.2 NVMe, it has only one such socket. Unfortunately, Corsair opted to configure that socket to hold the OS (primary) drive on models that include an m.2 NVMe SSD, with apparently no way at all to reconfigure it for secondary internal storage. This greatly complicates viable storage options.

I've moved this from the Video Hardware forum.

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: Project, Source Medis, Cache and Scratch on the fastest and largest SSD, OS and Programs on the other SSD.
