Question

Is it time for a new computer or will upgrading to SSD be enough?

So here's my predicament...

I'm a videographer with a Creative Cloud subscription. My primary app usage, far and away, is Premiere Pro. I have dabbled in After Effects a time or two but quickly noticed how it seems to choke up my laptop. Additionally, I recently upgraded to a camera that shoots 4K footage and have been pleasantly surprised as to how my machine can handle and render the footage. That being said, I've had my computer for nearly 5 years now and feel it's time to either buy a new one or finally upgrade my internal hard drive to an SSD. I've already maxed out the RAM and know that I can't make any upgrades to the processor or graphics card, due to the limited upgrade capability of the laptop. Any advice on whether an SSD should help me get a few more good years from the laptop or if the money would better be used towards a new setup (thinking about finally going Mac) would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

My setup is as follows:

Asus G750JX-TB71

OS: Windows 10 64-bit

Processor: Intel Core i7-4700HQ @2.40 GHz

Memory: 32 GB DDR3 1600MHz

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M - 3 GB GDDR5 SDRAM

Hard Drive: 750 GB HDD 7200 RPM

I would save the money for a new machine.

I was already to jump in and suggest upgrading to two SSD's as my G750JW has the same CPU and a GTX 765M with room for two 2.5 inch drives.  Now you model may not have two SATA III ports but I figured a way around that by using one of your USB 3.0 ports with my Favorite portable SSD the Samsung T series.  Then I uncovered a significant difference  between our laptops, your motherboard is only SATA II.so even if you repaced your hard disk drive with a SATA III SSD you would not get great performance out of that drive like I am getting.

If you invest in just the Samsung T3 or T5 on a USB 3. port it will be usable on your next generation lapto and I am guessing that you should get great, much faster performance it you put all your project files and media on it while you are editing that project.  I suspect that your 1TB hard disk drive is filling up and as such it slows down drastically.

Here are the results of my T3 drive on my Laptop USB 3.0 port

You can see that the sequential read/write is probably at least 4X what you are getting on that loaded hard disk drive.  This may give you a little new life until you spring for a whole new system.  I am editing 4K XAVC-S very smoothly.

That is excellent for an external drive Bill, and I just checked and they are not overly expensive.  Do they draw power from the USB cable?  My external HDDs all need a PSU.
