Is it worth upgrading your graphics card for 4k editing?

Hi, this is my current PC:

  • CPU: Ryzen 9 5950X
  • MB: MSI Mortar B550
  • MEM: 2x16GB DDR4 3200
  • GC: MSI RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 2x 8GB
  • PWR: MSI 850W 80 Plus Gold
  • STG:  1x1Tb M.2 (System and apps), 1x2Tb M.2 (RAW files), 1x250Gb SATA (cahce and some resources)

 

I'm gonna update this week to: 

  • MEM: 2x32Gb DDR4 3200
  • STG: 1x2Tb M.2 (System), 1x4Tb M.2 (RAW files)

 

I have to set the preview to 1/4 because it can't handle 4k sequences and it's something that annoys me because I consider that I have a decent stuff for 4k although sometimes I think that the graphics card is a bit lacking. I'm right?

 

Is it true that for 4k editing the graphics card plays a much more important role than in 1080?

Is it worth upgrading the RTX 3060 TI 8Gb for something superior?

How are AMD graphics cards working with the current versions of Premiere and After Effects?

I'm surprised you are not able to play 4K sequences in Full Res on your program monitor.

My older PC with Intel 9900K and Nvidia RTX 2070 Super can handle that OK.

Have you done all the usual stuff like Clearing Cache - Reset workspace etc.

Also clear you PC from all old junk files and ensure there are no other non essential processes running in teh background to load your PC resources unnecessarily.

As for upgrading, as you move more to 4K editing and other Codecs like ProRes I've found a more capable GPU is essential for faster rendering.

Yes, I clean cache very often.

And  I did a clean system installation a few months ago and I don't usually install unnecessary things beyond the Adobe suite, Office, other video programs like Bandicut and Capcut, as well as some games, but little else.

I usually work with 3-4 hour raw footage, and always with 2 tracks in 4k, eventually 3 or 4 more tracks at least.

As for codecs, I usually work with H265 raw with the occasional H264 clip.

What about clearing preferences file on start up ?

One other thing I picked up a while back was to ensure on your audio hardware settings - Input (if you have nothing plugged in) should be set to 'None'. This is in the Audio Hardware settings in Edit/Preferences selection.

That affected smooth playback of my timeline a long time back. Once it was set to 'None' it cured problems. I can only assume it causes random interrupts to the system due to noise ??. Its just an uniformed  guess.

Other stuff (which I am sure you have probably done) is to make sure you have the latest driver for your RTX 3060 from NVidia site under Drivers.

I'm using latest (as of today) 565.90 driver  on Version 25.0 of Premiere which so far seems to run OK.

One last thing - on the Nvidia Control panel I have use Nvidia settings ticked on each monitor for colour control ...but doubt that affects your issue. Always worth trying though.

Maybe somebody else on the forum can suggest other things to try?.

You might want to select 'custom installation' and then tick 'Clean installation'. Note this will completely remove any settings you have done so make a note of what you have done to re-enter them after install.

Do you have a second monitor plugged in as well through Mercury Transmit?
