Jerky playback in 4K timeline. Additional drive?

Hey guys,

I am working with Panasonic GH5 4K 10bit footage. Bitrate is about 150 mpbs.

I am on the following machine:

intel i7 6-core 3,8 GHz

Asus X99-A II

32 GB RAM

1060 GTX

1 x Samsung M2 960 EVO

(running win10, Adobe CC)

1 x Samsung 850 Pro

(Project files, media and cache)

Latest Version of PP

In my latest 4K projects playback is jerky. Checking my resources CPU usage is about only 50-60%.GPU and RAM are fine.

I was wondering what my bottleneck is? Would a seperate SSD drive help performance? If so would a simple 850 pro SSD help? Or should I look

into those: Intel® Optane™ SSD 900P Series ? My idea was to have media cache run on that seperate drive instead of on the M2.

Any ideal wouid be much appreciated! Thank, Alex

Use proxies.

I would try converting The footage to another codec and see how it plays back. The extra SSD scan help also but it could just be a issue with the GH4 footage being inefficient on the CPU for playback some other codecs also have GPU acceleration that helps.

Try one of these if you can render out  and see it if it helps playback.

  • DNxHR HQ - High Quality (8-bit 4:2:2)
  • DNxHR HQX - High Quality (12-bit 4:2:2) (UHD/4K Broadcast-quality delivery)
  • DNxHR 444 - Finishing Quality (12-bit 4:4:4) (Cinema-quality delivery)

I run a similar pc setup but wih 64Gb ram and footage I use is 4k prores 4.2.2 from Atomos external recorder.

Thank you. I try to avoid additional render or proxy processes.

Are they any specific setting that could help in Premiere pro? What else on hardware could help performance? What drive should be the fastest, media files or cache?
