Mercury playback compatibility

Hi, I'm looking into getting an iMac for video editing, as I've worked with them in the past with good results. I was wondering if the mercury playback engine (hardware acceleration) works on the 2016 iMac. I've heard you don't have to have an nVidia card for this to work, but then I also heard that you do. So I'm wondering which is correct.
