New laptop for video editing

Hello!

I am looking for some help concerning buying a new computer for (amongst other things) video editing in premiere pro and photo editing in lightroom. My absolute maximum budget is 1600 usd, but I really hope to find something a bit cheaper, maybe at around 1200 usd?

I am not editing huge projects, mostly 1-5 minute long. I am new at this and I am not sure what is the most important. But I have been looking at computers with Core i7 prosessors, 15 inch screen, a minimum of 16 RAM, VRAM at minimum 2GB and minimum 512 GB hard drive (I want to be able to back up my photos when I travel). I travel a lot, so it would be great if the battery was good and that it doesn't weigh a ton as well. My company prefers Lenovo and HP, but i think other brands also can be concidered.

I have been looking at Lenovo Yoga 730Core i7 8GB 512GB SSD 15.6", but somebody said in a fora that you can get a better laptop for video editing for the same price, but did not mention any examples.

Does anyone have a tips for either a laptop model that could fit me, or some insights in what specs I should look for? And does the things I have already thought about make sense? I would be super thankful for any insights!

Thanks for taking the time to respond! I live in Norway and I don't think we have all the same models as in the US, and the prices are also different. But I think I have narrowed it down to these two now:

The main difference I am wondering about is that the Yoga has 4 GB VRAM, but a max RAM capacity at 16GB, while the ThinkPad has 2 GB VRAM but a max RAM capacity at 32 GB. What do you think is the most important?

Of the two, I'd choose the one with more VRAM. 16 GB of RAM is plenty for most work, but if you get into 4K editing or heavy motion graphics it's not going to be enough. I think Quadro with 2 GB of VRAM is going to be more limiting a lot sooner.

Actyally you can't upgrade your CPU, but you might be able to upgrade your RAM in the future, so that's something to consider. When looking at laptops check the model numbers to see the max RAM capacity. Some only take 16 GB. Given this home truth, how practical is video editing on a laptop? As it turns out, many leading laptop manufacturers have now come up with devices that are not only capable of supporting editing pursuits but are also quite good at it.

Thank you for all of your input! I think the article carolm87542819 mentioned looks like a lot of help for anyone else reading this thread. I have already bought the Lenovo Yoga 730 and this far I have been really satisfied, but I will have to use it a bit longer to be certain that it is powerfull enough. But I enjoy the compact size and flexible design in addition to off course the rendering and exporting being so much faster than on my old PC. The fan is really loud, but I guess you have to expect that.

There are various things to consider while buying a video editing laptop like performance, display, etc... Now, as you have a budget of $1200-$1600, you will for sure get the specs you are looking for and even better. Internal SSD for better battery life, and a USB3 connection to use an external drive for video editing and backups

But, even with a good battery, you will need to connect the power adapter to the wall to do much video work
