Question

new mobo same disks

Now that Harm isn't here anymore the hardware forum is severely limited. Bummer.

I am thinking of going to place that built my custom computer for new mobo. Got win 10. I'll buy new license for it.

What I really want to do is keep the programs and data on SSD drive I use for root.

So that even remotely possible ? After a few days please move this to hardware, but just leave for a couple days here if you can..so the older members might see it.

Thanks !

    P.S.

yes, backed up a bunch of stuff yesterday and started marking ports and cables with camera tape ( what goes where ). I have to buy a new license for win 10 cause the new mobo is essentially a new 'machine' ( in this case OEM ).

And you're right.. nobody knows what will happen. Microcenter claims they can keep all the programs installed, but I don't believe that is really solid written in stone type thing.

Got everything to re-install but hate idea of spending so much time doing it. Also expect problem with Adobe as per the usual 'validation' stuff.

    yuck

    Thanks Jim,

I'm right on the fence re: whether to spend money AT ALL, cause my savings is dangerously low and I'm on fixed income. I could probably just keep the Pig as is, and get by OK.

I got the bmpcc ( old one, cinemaDNG full HD) and that works fine native.

The Nikon is DNxHD out of atomos, and that's fine native.

I'm doing advanced color tutorials. Those files are full HD from a black magic camera ( supplied by Blackmagic download) which come in as H264 ( or the downloads would be HUGE ).

Had to make DNxHR SQ proxies (optimized) and even THEN if I play in color page it staggers. Have to go to edit page to get smooth playback.

In past a friend sent me S Log 4k (past Winter ) and same deal .. was H264 out of his camera.

I think if I put about $1,000.00 into the Pig for mobo, chip, ram upgrades and just re-install the same drives etc... I'll no longer have those issues … and that would be the last thing I ever do to upgrade or buy any photo stuff... as I'd be tapped out with $$ unless I'm willing to jeopardize other future things ( like car repairs and health care costs and so on ).

I'm on the fence and waiting to hear back from the last round of yapping with microcenter that helped me build the pig in 2013.

    Thanks for your advice !

Thanks everyone. I guess this could be moved to the hardware forum now...

Jim, yeah, new cpu and memory.  been choking on some stuff without proxies and hoping this will solve it in some cases.

The Pig was built in 2013, so new stuff ( staying with full HD ) is more cores (8 instead of 4) , faster Hz cpu, dual channel ddr4 memory (faster).

Kinda scary cause I'm also (according to suggestions by guys that built the pig ) maybe switching from intel to amd, which I never used.

John, yeah, that's what the rep at company said. I have to buy new OEM win 10 license, use the new O.S. to install the drives for the new mobo, and he 'thinks' he can save all the programs and data as is on the root. The raid 0 ( my cache and proxies) he says I'll lose so I should back that up.  My investigations reveal a lot of opinions and smart people experiences and in the end I think this is a very IFFY situation.

Thanks Peru. I guess I can do that if I have to but I am praying I don't have to. It would take at least a week and just the work to re-install, re-calibrate, reset preferences, it boggles my mind.

    Thanks everyone !

Data, yes.  Programs, no. You will have to reinstall all programs.

I've never done that, but I have read in other places that Windows will, at the least, need to do a 'repair install' to re-activate due to the new hardware signature

I suggest you search Microsoft to find out about putting an existing boot drive in a new computer

Search bar at the top of http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

Why a new motherboard?  That's not something one would normally replace unless one had to, such as to support a new CPU model, or new memory type.
