Optimal laptop drive setup for productivity purposes (Including Premiere Pro)
Hello there, I am currently in the process of building a laptop for multimedia and productivity purposes, with the most storage-sensitive application I will running is likely Premiere. I will mostly be using graphic design software (Photoshop, Illustrator) and basic 3d sketching software for set plans as part of my job, however I will be working on music videos (1080p) in my spare time and wont be going near 4k/long projects for quite a while. So here are my thoughts/questions:
1) The Laptop I am building has 3 drive bays available, 1 x 2.5" SATA & 2 x M.2 (Nvme ready) slots. I have seen the puget systems article and video relating to the 2015 edition of P-Pro and that a 3 drive setup is optimal - is this still the case?
2) I am having to be quite budget conscious so i cant go getting a 4tb ssd and two 1tb nvme's - which would obviously be ideal. So I will state what setup(s) I am thinking of and if anyone has any pointers or advice, it would be greatly appreciated. To reference what I aim to use each drive for I have used this key: DRIVE C = OS/APPS , DRIVE D = WORKING-MEDIA/PROJECTS , DRIVE E = CACHE/SCRATCH/LEGACY-FILES/BACKUP
- A - 2.5" BAY: (E) 1TB WD Blue 3D NAND (560R/530W) / M.2: (C) 250GB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS (3500R/2300W) / M.2: (D) 250GB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS (3500R/2300W)
- B - 2.5" BAY: (E) 500GB Samsung 860 EVO (550R/520W) / M.2: (C) 250GB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS (3500R/2300W) / M.2: (D) 250GB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS (3500R/2300W)
- C - 2.5" BAY : (E) 500GB Samsung 860 EVO (550R/520W) / M.2: (D) 500GB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS (3500R/3200W) / M.2: (C) 256GB ADATA SX6000 (1000R/800W)
This is the rough setups I am thinking of for speed/convenience. If i outgrow my E drive, for backup space etc, I will upgrade it in future when I have more money to spend on it. All files while be seperate backed up onto a USB HDD when they are not in use to keep laptop storage as free as possible. I am happy to make some concessions in performance if it saves on battery life substantially.
Any thoughts/advice/opinions are greatly appreciated!
Nathan
