I have a windows 10 PC which i've had for some time but i'm thinking of getting a new laptop as my old one needs updating. This is for my personal use and to practise in building a portfolio for when i get a job in graphic design. Most of the job specs that i see use macs but can anyone tell me what is better for use with adobe packages?

Mac and PC will both work. I would wait until you see several benchmarks from the Intel Alder lake CPUs and the new CPUs from Apple.

This thread got moved to Video Hardware, but it sounds like you might be asking more about graphic design. Which specific Adobe applications are you most intereseted in using? The priorities for hardware vary depending on what kind of work you do.

It's up to you really. However, keep in mind that laptops aren't really upgradeable. If, for instance, the graphic chip gets too old, you can't just simply replace it with something better since it's usually built onto the mainboard. In the long run, a desktop PC with great specs may be a better option instead - especially cost-wise! Also, Macs may be the industry standard in the creative area, but a Windows PC will do the job just as fine as well.

Make sure to read the system requirements for each Adobe app that you intend to use.

You get a lot more bang for your buck with Windows PC and it's backwards compatible with older apps.  But either Win or Mac will work with Creative Cloud apps.  See the system requirements below.  And pay attention to both CPU and GPU  requirements.  You'll need more resources for graphics intensive apps like Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premier Pro and After Effects.  Buy the best you can afford.
