Question

Ryxen 5700G for Pr + Ae ??? Or do i have to go i7 12700 (Power Guzzler+Heat)

Hi....

Will the Ryzen7 5700G work well with the IGPU alone for Pr + Ae projects.
The projects will be 4K footage on 1080p timelines (sometimes QuadHD timelines), but all are short format like 2-3 minute projects. Say with 30-40 short 5 sec clips on the timeline for a project. Some color grading...few fx here and there.

Plz note, i have been working with an i3 6100.....yes seriously.... that too with just the HD530 iGPU....i set it to and in fact its real smooth... only thing i have to keep preview in 1/8 or 1/16 sometimes, and i dont get 1 single dropped frame. Silky smooth timeline scrub. Renders are slowwww, 1:25 ratio, as in.... a 1 min film takes 25 mins to render.

The remainder of the system is reasonably fitted...... Dual Nvme (OS+Scratch)... 64gb RAM...1TB SSD for project files/footage. 7200rpm for permanant media assets. 7200rpm for complete system backup. 650w Corsair Bronze PSU.

Then why do i want to upgrade ? I just would be happy if i can up my preview window res to 1/4 or 1/2 if im lucky, im not greedy. And when i draw masks and slide them around etc the system fans kick in and it moves slow on the screen. Some color grade sliders... sometimes slide slow or struggle. Same with after effects. But both.....touch wood never crash. Sometimes some filters or effects act up saying they need a GPU. Also when i start Pr or Ae they report IN RED that my hardware is inadequate and performance may be erratic....thats fair enough. In Ae when i change to 3D view Ae just vanishes from the PC like it was never open... also when i change the viewports to 2 in 1 or 4 in 1...Ae vanishes. Then sometimes the visual preview is stuck.....thats all.....everything else is working....i can hear audio track playback.... i can save the project etc... but the preview is frozen.... gotta restart and its back to normal.

So i plan to upgrade the processor to 5700G with a new mobo (rest of the rig stays same) and work with the IGPU till i can get a sanely priced Nvidia 2060 or 3070 something down the line. My thought is if the i3 could chug thru with its IGPU then im sure this one should definitely be slightly better at least for a year or so ?

My other option is to get a i7 12700 which many say would perform better, esp on timeline scrub n playback because of Intels hardware accelerated decoding/encoding etc. But the 12700 ive heard needs water cooling if im maxing it out...and is a power guzzler at some 180w peak. Which means upgrading to a new cooler and finally this would need a higher PSU. Heat and whine also might occur.

What is a good choice given the above. Do i really need a 12700.

Your advice will help me a lot.

Thanks in advance.

Can anyone suggest if the Intel 12700 will give better performance than R7 5700G ..................using just its intel stock cooler and my Corsair CV650 ?

You were only partially correct when it comes to your planned AMD versus Intel upgrade although your i3-6100 system with no discrete GPU is in serious need of upgrading because it is now more than seven years old, and Intel itself has already depreciated all 6th- through 10th-Gen CPU support to legacy status.

If you're not going to use a discrete graphics card at all the Intel i7-12700 system would be by far the better choice since you'll then be able to use both hardware H.264/HEVC decoding and encoding capabilities via Quick Sync. The AMD APU's integrated graphics has IIRC no hardware decoder or encoder at all, forcing everything onto a CPU that's actually weaker than some older-gen 8-core CPUs. In fact, a 5700G is only about as powerful (CPU-wise) as a previous-gen 3700X in CPU-intensive tasks. However, both CPUs will perform way better when you add a discrete GPU such as a GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB.

The maximum power draw of an i7-12700 system is offset by the shorter time needed to perform a rendering and and exporting task. Simply put, many systems with a lower maximum power draw will actually use up more total wattage to perform the same task as the more powerful system. After all, what good is a 65-watt CPU if it needs five times longer to render/export a video than a 253-watt CPU?

The other part of the story is the idle power draw. Since AMD has moved from a monolithic topology to a chipset topology, AMD CPUs (and by extension APUs) consume much more power at idle (that is, just sitting there doing nothing) than current Intel CPUs. It is very obvious that an AMD APU draws as much as 20W to 30W just idling, whereas current Intel CPUs frequently draw less than 10W at idle. And since most PCs sit much closer to idle most of the time, the differences between the 5700G and the 12700 offset one another.

100 percent right.....my i3 needs retiring :). Thats why the search for an upgrade.

I will definitely add a graphics card later on. So is the 5700G ok that way ?

In timeline scrub and working on layers etc.... will a 5700G give me about 2 times the snappiness of the i3 ?

Render times dont mean much in my case bec my projects are 2 minutes in length. Mostly between 1-2 mins and something to 3 mins in rare cases.

Ive seen a 5700G on youtube rendering a project like mine with color grades fx etc at 1:2 time ratio with a 4K timeline to 4K render. Thats overkill for me. Im only worried about the edit/timeline experience where i spend about 40 hrs on that project. Ive seen the 5700G idle at about 5 watts on YouTube. The base wattage itself is 65 watts on the 12700 ?

What do you feel if im definitely putting in an IGPU in the future. And for now this surely must be better than my current i3 system right ?

The only worry i have is about missing the hardware decoding (QSync).

You seem determined not to get the Intel, so go for the AMD, you have permission from here! 🙂

(I've only ever had Intel. Currently on a 12th Gen I9)
