Scratch drive speed

Hello forum!

I just picked up a newer laptop for video editing. I will be replacing the main HD with a SSD on a SATA III connection. My options for a scratch drive are: a partition on the main SSD, a HD on a SATA II connection or a USB 3.0 external. From reading through these forums I'm assuming that using a SATA II connection with a 2nd HD would be the best bet but I thought I'd seek out some wisdom before diving in. Thanks in advance.

Did you already figure out what you're doing for your scratch drive? If you go with a SSD or hybrid drive, you should see really good performance from both SATA or USB3. If your laptops supports a second internal drive, that can be nicer in that you don't have an external drive to worry about while on the go.

Also, when you asked about SATA, did you mean eSATA? Even if you did, it still depends on the drive type being SSD or hybrid.

Thanks Warren. I just picked up the Classroom in a Book for CS6 and I believe it mentioned that you want your fastest drive as your scratch disk. Does that sound right? Right now I think I'm doing it backwards with the SSD as the main drive (which is quite nice) and a standard (7200??) laptop drive as scratch. I do notice that if I import a whole folder of videos then it takes quite a while for the previews to become available in the project window.

I don't *think* I meant eSATA. It's just the connection that the DVD drive uses. I've fallen out of the interface loop
