Single Xeon swap for i7 - Is this possible?

Hello one and all,

I know this is a variation of the age old question, but I am not sure if this can be done. (probably not I think but it's worth asking)

If i purchase a single Xeon HP Z620 with 128GB RAM is it possible to simply swap the Xeon chip for a faster i7 chip with the same socket? I know i7 dont officially support ECC RAM but I have read that it can work just fine. Searching online is proving to be difficult for me to find an actual answer to this.

Thanks for any help or light on this matter... very much appreciated as always.

i doubt the chipset or bios would support i7's. it probably won't overclock either, so its likely you would get the same performance with the xeon version of whatever old i7 you were looking at.

Thanks Ronin for letting me know, I had a feeling I was barking up the wrong tree, but worth asking someone who has a clue unlike myself!

I really appreciate you getting back to me so quick, I think I may just look at a single Xeon then but the fastest one I can get and then as much RAM as I can afford... as far as I know with a i7 you can only have 64GB which I know is a lot, but I want room to expand a bit too!
