System 4K Capable?

Hi,

I'm hoping this is a simple answer for someone who is more knowledgeable of hardware specs and capabilities. I've been having trouble with editing 4K footage in Premier Pro CC 2019: With one clip playing and no effects the playback is lagging.

I've gone down a bit of rabbit hole trying to figure this out, GPU problems, CPU bottlenecks, enabling the correct render selection with CUDA, etc:

  • I've had the suspicion it is a GPU problem as my Nvidia card does nothing when monitoring, my intel GPU is at about 20% while my CPU is maxed out. I've gone through every forum I can find and it seems to have everything correctly setup, however the GPU still remains unresponsive. I've updated drivers, Installed CUDA, I've chosen the correct render, I've applied accelerated effects, nothing. I am missing something here?
  • I'm now thinking that perhaps the issue isn't the GPU but a bottleneck with my CPU however I have doubts given they were both stock options from Lenovo when purchasing the computer. Shouldn't they balanced? I don't know how to test or verify if this is an issue.
  • The storage setup doesn't seem a problem with same issue happening whether I source footage from SSD or RAID.
  • I'm starting to think my system more generally is simply not up to spec, which would go along with the bottle necking issue. However most minimal specification articles simply list what specific hardware I should buy rather than giving an abstract measurement of any given hardware piece. I'm not experienced enough to really understand how my hardware matches up to what I'm reading.

Bellow is the hardware my system is currently running, to experienced hardware knowledge is this simply not capable? Should I invest time looking into a work around with proxies or ingesting at lower resolutions? Is it possible to update any of these without building a new pc?

Lenovo W540 Purchased in 2014:

CPU: i7-4900MQ @2.8GHz

RAM: 32 GB DDR3

GPU 1: Intel HD Graphics 4600

GPU 2: Nvidia Quadro K2100M

OS Drive: Samsung SSD 840 PRO, 500GB, Internal Sata 3

Working Drive: MyBook Duo 4TB RAID 0, USB 3.0

Monitor: BenQ PD2700U (27in, 4k), Thunderbolt

Thanks, Jordan

would it be nonsense to upgrade the cpu?

I would suggest that you save the money until you can afford a new system and use the old one as a backup or for other use.
