I am trying to upgrade my system to handle both Adobe Premiere and After Effects better, but I am on a budget. Presently it gets choppy when I scroll through HD and 4K footage. I want it to run smoothly, and I can make do with long render times.

My specs:

MOTHERBOARD: ASUSTek M5A97 R2.0

CPU: AMD FX-8350

RAM: 16 GB DDR3 G-SKILL Sniper

GRAPHICS: 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960

OPTICAL DRIVE: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-224DB

PSU: Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 700W

COOLING FAN: Cryorig H7

CASE: Rosewill Challenger Mid Tower

HARD DRIVE: Seagate 1TB - ST1000DM003-1CH162

What's gonna make my computer run:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Adobe After Effects

with lag-free 4K footage for about $300 - $500 more than I have already spent?

In your case, the FX CPU is the problem: Despite its 8 cores and 4.0 GHz clock speed, it barely performs at the same level as a 4-core, non-hyperthreadable Intel i5 of the same vintage that only runs at 3.0 GHz when it comes to CPU-only (software-only) rendering performance in Premiere Pro.

    DV,

Thanks for the questions. Check system requirements. Do you meet the minimum?

    • AMD FX-8350 is from 2013, isn't it?
      • Not sure the gen of that CPU, but it sounds rather ancient.
    • 16 GB RAM: double that minimum
    • Add a fast hard drive for your media

I don't think you'll get "Lag-free 4K" but perhaps a nice proxy/transcode workflow would work nicely, in my opinion. I would start down that road with your current system if you aren't already trying that.

    Thanks,

    Many thanks, Kevin!

Edit: I wanted to ask, my AMD FX 8350 is 8-core and runs at 4.0 GHz, in that case what other specifications do I need to look out for when shopping for Adobe capabilities?
