Question

Upgrading gtx 780 to gtx 1060

hi guys,

unfortunately my graphic card Nvidia Geforce gtx 780 3gb broke and I need to buy a new one. I don't want to spend more than about 300 euro. I did some research and found gtx 1060 6gb. I'm not an expert and don't understand all of the specs... If I understood it correctly, I should have slightly faster performance than my old 780. The only thing I found strange is that 780 has more Cuda, than 1060. How important is that?

Did someone compared 780 and 1060 or upgraded from one to another?

I would appreciate your help a lot!

I mostly work with HD and 4K footage in Premiere.

Win 10 Home

i7-4770K 3.50GHz

32 GB Ram

256 GB SSD

3 & 8 TB HDD 7200 rpm

My take on this is:

For now, stick with your current GTX 780. This is because Premiere relies much more on GPU memory throughput than on CUDA cores or GPU clock speed. The memory throughput of both of those GPUs are very close to one another, and although the GTX 1060 is a bit faster than that GTX 780, it is not sufficiently faster than your current GTX 780 to justify spending that much money on it.

Things would have been different, however, if your current GPU were a lousy GT 710 or 730: Both of those GPUs were so sluggish that spending the equivalent of $400 USD for a GTX 1060 6GB card would have been much more palatable.

I'm looking at a similar upgrade (cross-grade)

Sorry to hear your 780 has failed.

My 780 is "unstable" and can require frequent reboots.

I plan to replace it with a 1060 6GB if and when the prices start to fall.

I think it is the best value for people in our situation.
