Question

Which is better: 16+16gb or 32+8 gb RAM?

Hi all,

I recognize Adobe official suggest the first thing to update to make Premiere Pro runs better is the RAM.

I have a laptop that comes with 16gb (8+8) RAM. A friend of mine who also does some video editing told me it's extremely unlike for me to need more than 32GB ram, so I plan to upgrade it in the nearby future.

I have did a little research on the topic, but everyone is discussing whether 16+16 or a single 32 is better. I KNOW 16+16 is better than 1 single 32, but what about 32+8(total of 40) vs. 16+16? Let's assume my machine supports 32gb ram first.

If 32+8 is similar to 16+16, then it seems buying 1 single 32ram to upgrade is definitely better: leaves room for further upgrade and slightly cheaper.

Thank you very much!

In your case, stick with 16+16. 32+8 will force single-channel-only memory operation over 24 GB, and if the two memory slots within a dual-channel-mapped pair are filled with unequal sizes, then the memory controller will be forced to run in a funky hybrid mode where only the first 16 GB runs in dual-channel while the remaining 24 GB runs in single-channel-only mode. This will kill the system's memory throughput, which will negatively impact performance. In the worst case scenario, 32+8 will run entirely in single-channel-only mode, which destroys performance in content creation apps.
