Which of these hard drive combos would be best for PP?

Hello all,

I will be buying a new computer system which will be more Premiere Pro friendly. The two systems are identical with the exception of their hard drive configuration. The systems consist of:

Intel i9 9900K, 3.60GHz to 5.0GHz

32GB Ram DDR4 2666 MHz

GeForce RTX 2080 8GB

The hard drive options:

2TB 7200 PRM + 256GB PCle SSD OR 1TB 7200 RPM + 512GB PCle SSD

Which one of these hard drives would be better for Premiere Pro?

Neither one.

With a high end system like that, get two fast SSDs: 256 or larger for the OS and 1 TB or larger for media and cache.

256 gig is more then enough for OS and software:

First I always do is move Document to a different drive as well as the Adobe temp files.

John - Thank you for the info and links. I will look at the links tonight. My current configuration (not ordered yet pending a discussion with Jared of Puget Systems) has 512GB and a 1TB M.2 SSDs and if I go with a third, which I believe I will, it will likely be 1TB (SSD) as well.

My current laptop is an i5 4200 RPM with 8GB of RAM... you can imagine what happened when I tried to edit 4K footage (even with proxies!)...omg....not good. The new system should make for a more pleasurable PP experience... 🙂

If you've got the budget for it, go for it! You could probably save a bit by using spinning disks as media drives, but then it won't have that smooth buttery editing experience that you'll enjoy with SSDs

I agree that 256Gig is plenty large enough for operating system and programs... I am only using 90Gig of my 256Gig boot drive for Win10 and all programs, plus the default location for MS Office files on the boot drive

Thanks to both of you for your input. After researching a bit further I've decided to go with a custom build with 2 Samsung 970 Pro M.2 SSDs and I may opt for a 3rd (to store media cache and scratch). I will stick with the i9 9900K but will increase RAM to 64GB.

This is more than I wanted to spend but the system will be expandable so it should serve me well for years. The system will be built by Puget Systems.

You can fit the OS on 256GB, you'll want more media space.
