I am not intending on editing 4k, and am investigating upgrading the RAM to 16 GB and installing an SSD. I've seen some success from that with this model.

That may work for you.  You can use proxies as well.

It has a weak processor, not enough RAM, and a single, slow (5400 RPM) drive.

Short answer: No.

It will be very, very, very slow if it works at all.

You will not be able to edit HD.  You may be able to edit SD.
