Question

Saving materials larger than 2K?

When I capture material for 3D the default size is 2K.  Is it possible to capture at a higher resolution such as 4K as that is better suited to close up renderings.

Hi, Thanks for writing to us, Currently it is not possible to capture materials at a higher resolution such as 4K. We have investigated adding support or 4K internally. At the time, we concluded, due to the much larger memory footprint associated with 4K materials, it won't be feasible to add support for 4K material capture on handheld devices in a reliable manner across the device spectrum. However, as handhelds and their capabilities evolve, we can certainly revisit this if there is enough interest.

Thanks for the reply.  I just started using capture and it is so liberating being able to spontaneously aggregate elements for asset creation in a mobile device.  Where exactly is the limitation for larger resolutions though since most phones now can record 4K video and certainly 4K photos?  Couldn't the larger capture sizes simply be an option for those with capable devices?

In light of this size limitation I guess for 3D material creation it makes more sense to just take a regular photo and prepare it as a PBR texture in Substance Alchemist.

For 4K materials, using Substance Alchemist is certainly an option.

For larger resolutions, some recent devices are definitely capable of handling the memory overhead of storing the image and the intermidiate results from material extraction procedure. If there is enough interest for generating 4K materials on the handheld device itself when it is capable of doing it, we would be happy to do it as our prioritization allows.  I have noted down this as a feature request and would inform our product manager for prioritization.

    Thanks again for the feedback.
    best,
