Adobe Acrobat DC won't display PDF that Adobe Reader can display

I have a windows 7 computer with Acrobat DC installed. I scan a document to PDF using an Epson printer.

Adobe Reader will open this document. Adobe Acrobat DC will not open it and only displays a grey background and gives no error message.

This happens for all PDFs created by the scanner, it's not a one-time fluke.
