you have an upgrade version of acrobat xi.

after you start the xi installer you are prompted for your xi serial number.  after entering it the installer will prompt you to select the previous version of acrobat from which you upgraded.  after selected that you are prompted for the previous version's serial number.

enter the correct number at the correct time and installation will proceed.

Hmmm

My problem is, that I don't have the serialnumber from Adobe Xi any longer - it is several years ago it was installed and my office/pc has been changed a couple of times.

Is it completely impossible to install XI Pro without the old serialnumber?
