After inserting a page the view changes to thumbnail. How do I stop that.

I do not know of a way. I look at as a confirmation that I inserted the page at the correct location and if I need to move it all I have to do is drag and drop the field to the correct location.

You could write a too with JavaScript to insert the page as needed and then change the navigation panel as desired using the undocumented doc property of pane.
