How do I access the properties of a selected field with an app level script?

Sorry. I mean this state of a field:

Yes, that's what I thought, and it's not possible to pick it up using a script.

What do you mean by "selected", exactly?

What I try to establish is a menu (or keyboard) command to set specific properties for a field element that currently is selected. For example; Arcobat Pro has a limited set of custom formats. So I want a macro that sets the Format property of a selected field to "special", "Arbitrary Mask" and "999.9999.9999.99". As I have to do this for a number of acrobat documents a macro makes sense.

You still haven't explained what you mean by "selected". A script can process all the fields in the file, or it can process some fields, based on their name, what page their are on, their type, or other properties, but it has no way of knowing what fields you selected on the screen, if that's what you mean.
