It might be driver's issue as drivers are not yet released or upgraded by mutiple scanner providers.

So please try some options available under Troubleshooting tips for scanner issues when using Acrobat

I hope it will resolve your issue.

All the help in Adobe wants me to upgrade to DC and I am using XI.

Since I have a Mac, Acrobat is a 2nd thought software, since I can manually scan from printer to computer.

Scanner should work for Acrobat XI as well.  Can you please share the scanner name.

Most of the scanner providers didn't released their updated version of drivers for Mac Sierra yet.

Please verify your scanner's site once to make sure they start supporting Mac Sierra and latest driver is available.
