Ctrl-C is adding characters in a copy operation!?

I have used Ctrl-C in many pdf files and have never seen the following: attempting to copy from a pdf document that I had previously printed and Ctrl-C (or right-click-copy) is adding extra characters, i.e., 114433994411. (This is a six digit serial number I wanted to paste to another document.)
