Edit Text in a PDF operating strangely

I have a scanned file that I'm trying to clean up, turning all of the text into fresh type, not the rendered font Acrobat creates when you OCR, but I'm running into a problem.

I go to add a space to the text between t and W, and the W starts moving to the left!

This is the current instance of running into this problem, but it's far from the first time I've seen this happen. How do I tell Acrobat "Treat this like fresh text, strip all strange spacing and weirdness". Or even just make it so that I can fix these errors.
