Error occurring whenever i try to open pdfs that were sent to me, but can open ones created by me

When someone sends me a pdf and i go to open it, i am getting the inserted error message. I have tried renaming the file to see if that helps and nothing. It started about a week or two ago.

The message (the first paragraph) is probably simply true. It isn't the name, it's the contents. How are you sent the files? My guess is email. Can you get them some other way (e.g. memory stick, wetransfer.com...)
