Format of converted Word file

I have just converted a number of PDF documents to Word (using Export PDF), extracted material from the converted files, and then merged this information into a single Word document.  However, instead of ending up with a file in “Normal” format, I have a “Normal + (Latin) Arial, 12 character scale: 110%” format," which creates all kinds of anomalies in the text.  I have no idea why this has happened, and I can’t seem to change it back to "Normal".  Any ideas?  The only thing I can think of is that the converted files were “.docx” files, and I’ve saved the extracted material in a “.doc” file.  Could that be the problem (and how can I correct it)?
