Tech support refuses to help adapt my 9pro acrobat to work with office 2010. are there other programs besides adobe that will work with it?

There is no question of "adapting". Adobe have to make changes, often major ones, to support Office changes.

In my view it would be quite wrong of Adobe to give this away, because they would be subsidising Microsoft;.

Agreed, it is a bit cheeky, but the arrogance of Adobe refusing to support software I paid  for has spoiled my mood.  Did their marketing & management folks miss the examples of digital watch pricing et al in grad school?

In this tech environment, their approach just begs for a reasonably-priced share entrant.

Today's  consumers will pay for product utility & reliability, not overhead.

  I would rather not go back to sending word files to customers, but my options seem limited.

Adobe support software for a couple of releases. If you don't get on the upgrade bandwagon, your support finishes, as as happened for Acrobat 9 and 10. You may not like this, but it is useful to understand the facts. Adobe now sell most of their software on subscription only, and subscribers get new releases as they come out. Systems and apps are changing ever faster, so this model is looking ever more attractive. I think the days where we can buy a product and expect it to be working in 8 years are pretty much gone.
