Linking Excel to pdf

I have created a pdf for intranet usage originally with MS Word. I have some links there that should open an Excel sheet in fileshare, but once the pdf is opened in browser, the links don't work. I've tried multiple ways to do the link, but none helps. What causes this and is there anyway to get them working?
