My computer freezes when I open a PDF

I am running windows 10 on an Acer laptop. My computer completely freezes when I open a PDF in either reader or acrobat. It used to work but suddenly freezes. I did not install anything new or make changes to the computer. My computer is up to date and even freezes in compatibility mode. I reinstalled both programs and the problem is not fixed. I'm out of ideas.
