i have Acrobat X Pro. let me be clear from the outset - i HATE adobe reader dc and do not want it installed.

firefox has been saying for some time that my acrobat plugin is out of date. but "updating" the plugin only results in attempts to install reader dc.

how can i just get the firefox plugin?

The plug-in isn't a separate thing you can install "loose". It is a part of Acrobat or Reader. Indeed, the security fixes aren't in the plug-in part, they are in the Acrobat or Reader part.

FireFox is a bit confused about the difference between Acrobat and Reader. Of course you don't want Reader DC. You need to buy an upgrade or subscription to Acrobat DC if you want security fixes.
