PDF Image Resolution

Just wanted to clarify something for myself. I'm not familiar with Image quality and such so sorry for asking such as newbie question.

I normally scan documents and photos in 600 DPI. When I create a PDF, is setting a the PDF image resolution to anything over 600 a waste of time? Can the PDF upgrade the quality or will it top out at 600?
