Placing PDFs in InDesign retaining its highlights and annotations

I have PDFs that already contain highlighted text and annotations. When I place them into image boxes in InDesign they disappear. After exporting a new PDF from that InDesign document I have to re-highlight causing repeated work. Thanks for your help.
