Porfolios un-openable

I am having trouble all of a sudden combining files into a single pdf that others can open? For 10 years I have done this successfully until I had to reinstall Adobe Pro XI after a system crash. The way files are combined has changed & am trying to figure out how to simply combine several files into one to make it easier to email.
