Printing after creating from Word 2016 to a pdf file

Interesting problem when I took a pdf created by Adobe Acrobat DC (15.006.30119) to the printers.

All the captions and graph labels were not black at 100% but at 87%.

Printer suggested I created it at 'Press' quality so that is what I did from Edit/Preferences.

Made no difference at all although he assured me that everything in a font would be printed onto a pdf file as 100% black.

Any ideas where I have gone wrong?
