"Save" is "Save As"?

I have a pdf, which I opened in Adobe Reader DC by double-clicking the file.

I added a sticky note and then attempted to save the file.  The save icon, File -> Save, and ctrl-s all prompt me to save the pdf as a new file, as if I had chosen "Save As" rather than "Save."

I can overwrite the existing file just fine, but it has to prompt me to ask if I'm sure I really want to.

What gives?

Try this: Go to Edit - Preferences - Security (Enhanced) and disable Protected Mode.

The behavior as observed is As-Designed for Reader in Protected Mode(by default ) for any PDF. This prevent exploits from tampering the PDFs an user opens. Thus, any save operation (for Reader in Protected Mode) must trigger a Save As dialog. You can disable Protected Mode for Reader by following : Go to Edit - Preferences - Security (Enhanced) and disable Protected Mode. Once the user selects a file in the Save dialog, subsequent saves to the same file (via, say, Ctrl-S) while the file is open in Reader will be completely transparent and no further save dialog will be shown.
