Scaled fonts from Indesign to PDF result in print bug

Hi everyone,

just encountered a strange bug with some PDF files I made.

I created a file in Indesign where some type is scaled horizontally (sometimes less than 100%, sometimes more). These Indesign files are then exported as PDF using the preset "High Quality Print".

Printing these PDF files from my Mac to our Canon c5255i (with PS driver) works fine, but when my collegues print the same file using Acrobat Reader on Windows all scaled fonts (that is: all non 100% horizontally scaled fonts) are replaced with black bars.

When I put the fonts back at 100% horizontal scale, export a new PDF then everything works fine.

I've been using the same Indesign file for some time now, never had any issues.

Starting this week we noticed that strange bug in the PDF files. Acrobat Reader on Windows is still the same since before - I always upgrade to the latest available version of Adobe CC.

Anyone else having the same issue ? Is it related to the latest CC update maybe ?

Thanks for your comments

Tom

Issue has nothing to do with CC application export of PDF. This is proven by the fact that if you view and print from Acrobat on MacOS you experience no problem.

The problem your colleagues may be experiencing under Windows may have to do with either the most recent Windows 10 update and/or printer drivers for non-PostScript printers. Can you provide some more information as to their exact print environment or possibly post one of these files such that we can check this out here at Adobe?

Hi Dov,

here are the details of the drivers and software:

Mac environment

  • MacOS Yosemite 10.10 or Sierra 10.12
  • Adobe Indesign CC 2015.4 Release - 11.4.1.102 Build
  • Printer driver: Canon iR-ADV C5250/5255 PS v4.7.0
  • Printer Canon c5255i

Windows environment

  • Windows 10 PRO 64bit
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader DC 15.017.20053.63404
  • Printer driver: Canon Generic PCL6 driver v3.2.0.0
  • Printer Canon c5255i

You can download a fautly file here: WeTransfer

Hope this helps finding the cause of this behaviour.

Thanks for the help,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for providing both the information and the file.

I have tried printing the file to both PostScript (including Canon iR5030) and non-PostScript printers in my facility both under Windows 7 and Windows 10. No failures (unfortunately - since inability to reproduce makes solving problems more difficult).

That having been said, since your Canon printer supports PostScript, install and use the PostScript drivers under Windows, not the PCL6 drivers. The PCL6 support in Canon printers is not “native” anyway. The PostScript for this device is Adobe PostScript 3 (the real thing).

Try replacing the driver with PostScript and let us know if that resolves the problem or not!

However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the PDF file itself or how it is generated by InDesign.

Got the same problem here at the company. And it's terrible since we have a huge amount of product leaflets that use a similar design and therefore all got horizontally scaled fonts.

I really hope they solve that soon, because the demand of printing stuff for half the company is driving the people with Macs crazy here.

Just found a workaround:

Right Click the PDF File > Open With... > Microsoft EDGE > Print

Didn't work with Chrome, haven't tested with Firefox.

It isn't the best workflow but it's better than black bars.
