What is happening to the images?

Created a pdf document and inserted 300 dpi tiff images, then saved as a pdf. Looked great. When it was uploaded to Amazon's 'Search Inside This Book' feature, the images were blotchy with no smooth gradation in the grayscale. What's happening. From image 1 to image 2.

Clearly Amazon process the file in some way, especially if you upload at far too high a resolution. Best to ask them how to minimise bad effects. Though I don't think accurate reproduction is a priority. Damage might even be deliberate to protect IP.

Thank you. I was thinking, maybe the effect is caused by their compression 'method'.
