Why can I not combine files without a subscription?

I had Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional and my computer (Windows 10) just upgraded and installed Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and now it seems like I do not have any of the capabilities I had before. Now it wants me to subscribe for the functions that I used to have. Do I just need to uninstall it?

adobe reader only allows you to view pdf files.  it allows no editing of files.

your acrobat 8 pro has more functionality.

at this point uninstall reader and see if acrobat 8 works.

if not, or if it's been uninstalled,

uninstall reader

secure your acrobat 8 serial number and then uninstall acrobat 8

clean reader dc and acrobat 8 per Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

restart your computer

reinstall acrobat 8 pro.

You will have to upgrade or subscribe to Acrobat DC as Acrobat 8 will not run on Windows 10, at least not with full functionality.
