Exploring Cynefin through Creativity

We’ve been exploring Cynefin — a beautiful Welsh word that describes our place of belonging: the landscape of our identity and the interweaving of where we come from and who we are.

Although we all live in Wales, each of our Cynefin is unique — shaped by our memories, cultures, languages, and lived experiences.

Using Adobe Express, learners brought their personal interpretations of Cynefin to life through vibrant digital designs. Templates and creative tools helped them express what belonging looks and feels like — in colour, words, and imagery.

How might this look in your part of the world?
Every culture has its own version of Cynefin — a word, phrase, or idea that captures belonging, identity, and connection to place. Educators everywhere could adapt this project by:

Exploring local words or traditions that describe “home” or “belonging.”

Encouraging learners to reflect on their own landscapes — physical, cultural, or emotional.

Using digital storytelling tools to visualise identity and community.

Sharing projects across countries to compare how belonging is expressed through different cultures.

What would your students create to represent their sense of belonging?

@Kate Sturdy -- THIS IS SO AWESOME.

I love the conversation and creativity associated with your discussion of Cynefin - and that your community is able to explore what belonging looks and feels like. Such a beautiful shared experience that no doubt is a profound for all.

Truly remarkable also that the dialogue is open and a celebration across cultures. Thank you for leading the way with this Welsh idea and example. It's a lesson we all can benefit from - and I appreciate you taking the time to share it here with everyone!

Thank you so much for sharing this project! I've never heard of the word Cynefin and it has such a beautiful meaning. I'm curious where the idea for this lesson came from. 🙂

Thank you. I made the lesson up! I try to use Adobe Express for a lot of lessons in the classroom. As we are in Wales we follow a Welsh Curriculum. It is very important that children learn about their identity and belonging and what it means to be part of Wales.
