First Project Vibes

Hey everyone! 👋

I'd love to start a thread where we can post ideas, templates, or even pictures to help share with each other what we use as our very first project with students when introducing Express!

I teach a wide range of grades (Kinder-5th) so I have a different approach depending on the group of students I have in class but am always looking for other suggestions.

In your response, please include --

  • the grade/s you use the idea/template with 👩‍🏫

  • a link, picture or description of the idea 🔗🖼️️

  • anything else you think might be helpful 💭

I can't wait to brainstorm with all of y'all! 🥰

Hello and welcome @Adrvenezia we're so glad you are here in the ACE Community! I cannot see the visuals you shared in the link as I think the settings are private in how you shared it. If you update, please feel free to tag me! I'd love to see them! No doubt you are doing dynamic things to support your students! So glad you are here!

@@Ms_Morgan15 @thenextgenlib I will not give Ms. Morgan a hard time for not sharing some of her awesome activities. . .I'm sure they will be coming very soon 😉

For me, everything starts with the Guided Activities and before that, it was the monthly creative challenges. Why? Because all of the activities are thoughtful in design and practical in their ability to reach all students. Most importantly for me, for almost every guided activity, the student is the subject matter and Adobe Express is the technology so students really get to focus on learning the tool instead of trying to think of what to use as a subject. However, this is only the start, next becomes the connection to my subject matter content.  I frequently find myself trying to think ahead about how I might apply the skills learned in a guided activity to connect with a curricular piece. This way, when a student already has the technical skill, she is ready to focus on the content (math, history, science, art, English, etc.) because she is already familiar with the technical requirements needed to be successful - thank you, Adobe!!

I love the OG Guided activity, "Design an All-About-Me Graphic," but add an AI element (since text-to-image in Express didn't exist when this activity was created). The ad would be that the students could use a picture of themselves, or they could use AI to create an idealized version of themselves. Since most of my students are high school, I like to give options. The lower elementary may want to stick with the original activity.

1. All About Me Graphic - could truly be done at any age level (this one was created for HS)

2. Allow room in the activity for students to be creative within the guidelines. When they finish, they could duplicate the page and do a whole new version of themselves, etc. They could also become classroom assistants if they pick up on the tool quickly.

3. Now that they have the skill of image insertion and editing, text editing, and shapes. . .students can apply this learning to another project. How about an All-About-Triangles Graphic, or a character from history, science, or a novel. . .The possibilities are endless!!

4. The second activity would most definitely include character animation!! Perhaps a redo of the first project with the addition of a character who explains all-about-you!!!!

Jeff... 😆 You're too funny. I'll get to see you next week, right?! I hope so!!

I love love love the about me graphic! I definitely use that one with my older elementary students to start off with! It's also really fun to get them to do it year after year as somewhat of a 'timecapsule' for them as they change and grow each year. No, this is not something I just thought of in this current moment ... Ha! I might just have to try doing that with the kids this year! I think it would be super cute.

One of the projects that I loved doing wiht my students this last year was an Generative AI Ecosystem! The only 'requirement' was that their creation had to make someone stop and 'scratch their head'... In the one I'm including, the students had the correct animals for the ocean but they were 'incorrectly' colored! It was so much fun! And, like you said, the kids learned how to use the Gen AI and then we tied in a science component! The teachers were very thankful! 😆

One of the other projects that I do with kids is just simply creating their name. First, they choose a picture of something the love. Then we go through the steps of adding their name, adding the shape effect and then cutting out the text so that it reveals their background! Claudio gave me the original idea and I've done it with my students for the last two years! They're always AMAZED when we press the 'cutout text' button... I make it a super dramatic thing where we countdown to press the button at the same time. It's so much fun!

@@Ms_Morgan15 I am not gonna lie, I, too, learned about the cutout text from one of Claudio's IG video posts. I also used to love to use the Introduce Yourself with AI Text Effects creative challenge as a beginning-of-the-year project! One of the great things about these types of "name tags" is that they can easily be added to any project by clicking on "My Stuff" and inserting the project as an image into your current project. . .maybe I do that a lot 😉

I also love the AI you used in your Vast Ocean text-to-image graphics. In a similar manner, I used the AI text-to-image, text, media, and design elements to create a background image for a biome project. Using the four topics of: climate, flora and fauna, terrain, and challenges, students would create their background, then use Animate Character to explain their chosen biome. For me, the key is to have students write a script that is under a minute and practice it before recording the Animate Character. This way, the students deepen their learning and create an interesting video project as a result. Two ways to modify is to have students, depending on age, receive feedback from an LLM (chat GPT, School AI, etc.) to ask for feedback on their script and ensure that it is under one minute. Also, using the Caption Video + Translate text to make the video accessible to a larger audience. Here is an example of the dessert biome, with captions in English (Caption Video Quick Action), and in Spanish (Translate inside of the Express Editor).

The Desert Biome (Gr 6)

Has anyone else done a similar project? @Benjamin_Scott4599 I loved your article on video in the classroom. Have you experimented with the Caption Video quick action or the translation feature inside Express? If so, how did you use it?

This is genus!

I am a middle school librarian so I work with 6th-8th grades.

I love using Fluffertuff Guided Activity with my students because it app smashes genAI and animate character and the kids have a blast making their own. https://new.express.adobe.com/new?learn=exercise%3Aexpress%2Fhow-to%2Fin-app%2Ftest

Haha! Thanks!

I love that Guided Activity so much! The kids really have such a fun time with the AI and creating their own creature. For whatever reason they seem to struggle when coming up with the name for their creature. Any suggestions on how to create one? I almost want to find one of those 'Elf Name Generator' pages that we used to do where it was something like "The last thing you ate and the name of your childhood animal". 😆
