Looking for an activity to kick off the school year on the right foot? Why not have your middle schoolers share their voice in an authentic way by creating class expectations using their Gen Alpha slang. Check out the example:

Following an "I do", "We do", "You do" approach:

  1. First share your teacher-generated model like the one above.
  2. Then give an example of a class expectation like "Respect others when they're speaking" and have them turn and talk to share out how they would translate the class expectation using Gen Alpha slang. Sample responses could be "Let them cook" or "Don't talk over the main character".
  3. Finally have students create their own posters in Adobe Express using this template. Have students generate their own images using AI and write their class expectation with translation.

Wishing you all a great start to the school year! 🙂

Liz, this made me laugh out loud in the best way. “Don’t talk over the main character” is such a perfect translation. I love how you’re showing kids that their language and culture belong in the classroom while still building shared norms. Pairing it with an Express poster feels like the exact kind of creative ownership we want to encourage this year. Thanks for sparking such a fun idea to start the year strong!!
