Choosing the Best Font for Children’s Books in Adobe Fonts

Hi everyone! For my thesis, I’m looking for suitable fonts for Grade 3 children’s books that are legible, friendly, and engaging. According to our key informant, we should try fonts that are less round or bold, but not too serious or technical.

If you know any fonts available on Adobe Fonts that fit this description, please suggest them along with supporting references (studies, articles, or books) about why they are good for children’s reading. Your input will help in selecting the best font for the book!

Thanks in advance! 😊

I don't think there are any good reliable rules about features in letters that work across the board. For every rule about letters being "less round," "less bold" or whatever one can find typefaces or type families that are exceptions to that rule. A good typographical choice for a specific project may depend on a given font just feeling right.

So many factors can steer type choices in a certain direction. Are the children's books illustrated? Do the pages have blocks of paragraphs or just a few lines of text? Do the stories in the books take place in present day time or periods in the past? Do the books have certain genres, themes, etc?

Type legibility is important for children's books. Type objects are often set larger in easier to read point sizes. Line spacing should not be breathable, not cramped.

The main "Browse All" page at the Adobe Fonts web site is a good starting point. Look at the tag listings on the left side of the page. Categories like "Fun," "Comic," "Friendly," and "Marker" can bring up good suggestions. I'd look in the "Clean" category too; it may contain some decent choices for body copy elements.
