Cormorant Garamond Single Quote

I've been using Cormorant Garamond in a large docment for months. All of a sudden the single left quote is replaced by a character that is like a flat caret. I can retype, type in another box, delete, restart etc. and it's still there. I imagine I have some settings wrong somewhere.

Which application are you using to create or edit the document? Do you have smart punctuation features turned on? Adobe Illustrator will sometimes revert to using vertical dumb quotes and apostrophes.
