Fonts from the foundry Newlyn will be replaced on June 6th,2022

Hello Everyone,

Hope you're doing well!

Fonts from the foundry Newlyn will be replaced on June 6th due to a name change at the request of the foundry. This update will ensure consistency for Newlyn fonts across font menus and operating systems.

The renamed fonts will be auto-activated for any customers who have the previous version selected at the time of update. However, existing project files that use these fonts will display a Missing Fonts error upon opening. Select the same styles under the new name to continue editing your project; their appearance will not be altered.

Existing web projects will not be affected by this update. We will continue to serve the fonts to published web projects regardless of name. Please feel free to post any questions in the comments.

Thanks,

Harshika

Great question. The names will be very similar. Any Newlyn fonts that end with New will now begin with New. (ie. Farm New would be replaced with New Farm).

Thankfully the foundry was able to supply us with the old version of an affected font for our organisation to use in a publication that is about to go to print. We pointed out to Newlyn that Adobe were stating the font would be unchanged. Newlyn said that this was incorrect: that they are constantly 'making improvements and technical adjustments' to their fonts. In our case the newly-named version caused a fully typeset 240pp book to reflow differently due to differences in tracking and kerning, and it would have been impractical for us to go through the entire project to adjust it. But this has certainly highlighted a big flaw in using cloud-based fonts that we're unable to archive for future use... as a publisher, what happens when we want to reprint a book in 5 years time? The whole functionality of InDesign packaging a project for ease of future use is rendered useless by us being unable to archive a copy of the font with that package, as demonstrated by the debacle of this update. The result for us is that we simply cannot risk using cloud-based fonts in any of our future projects unless it becomes possible for us to effectively archive the font with the rest of the project package. Will that be possible?

That is a very good question I would also like to have an answer to!

We definitely understand your concerns. Other than Adobe Originals the fonts we offer are the owned IP of the foundries who contribute to the library. When it comes to naming, availability, versioning etc., we must comply with their wishes. Our library team works very hard to prevent any changes that would create issues for our users, but there are occasions where we have no choice.

The fonts in our library can all be licensed individually from the foundry or their reseller. While we can't predict any future decisions a foundry might make, we can say confidently that our offerings are stable overall, and we will always point you towards the appropriate perpetual desktop license if you have concerns.

I literally have hundreds of presentations with several of these fonts, and I manage thousands of assets for my department with the same fonts. Are you telling me that I now need to go through each and every presentation individually and manually replace all the versions that I use of this family? This seems a very user-unfriendly process. There surely must be a more convenient way to go about doing this.

Our team (incorrectly) understood that changes would not be made to the font other than the name. Here is the information we received from the foundry:

Like all software, Newlyn fonts are occasionally improved with new versions that include visual and technical improvements such as bug fixes and additional language support. On the occasion that these improvements cause undesirable changes to documents, we will endeavour to supply legacy versions of the font files. Please contact .

Hi Molly, your answer has nothing to do with the question I posted. The concern I brought up, was that the manual replacement of this font with the updated version is a big inconvenience and takes up a lot of time, especially when it concerns hundreds of files. What can you offer to make this less time consuming?

Hi, we have a broblem with the New Hero -family. And spesifically the "Super" font.

In finnish language we have a lot of letters "ä", "ö".  And the dots on "ö" are misplaced, offset, in a very clear way (see the screenshot).  This mistake is clearly visible in desktop use and also on web-pages.

This happened after the name change. Which is strange. Obviously something else has changed also.

Could someone look at this bug? We are using New Hero a lot in a rebranding case. And this bug will raise questions.

    Kind regards,

    Erkki

    Hi Erkki,

We just uploaded new files for New Hero that will hopefully correct the issue you're seeing with diacritics. Please deactivate the font and re-activate it to make sure you have the newest version, and let me know if you're still having trouble.

    Best regards,

Hi there, I have set a 224pp book in 'Rubik New' and am sending it to print next week. When I replaced the font with 'New Rubik' this morning it has completely changed my set text. It said that it was only a name change, but I think it's changed tracking or something as I now have new line breaks along with widows and orphans where previously I had none. Can you please tell me if you've had similar issues with this font change and, if so, how I can solve it? I don't have time to reset the entire publication and put everything back to where it was pre font change. Thank you for your help 🙂

Hello! Sorry to hear you're having trouble. The foundry sent over new files for New Rubrik and New Rubrik Edge this morning. The files have just been updated in our service. Can you please deactivate and then re-activate the fonts (just to make sure you have the latest version) and let me know if the issue persists?

Hi, unfortunatelly the font is not complete - there are signs missing in Regular, Regular italic and SemiBold Italic.

    Hello!
I've been using New Kansas on a branding project, and am unable to locate it right now so that I can get the code for using it as web font. It wasn't one whose name changed, but the Newlyn foundry is currently only showing New Herman, New Order, and New Spirit. Does this have something to do with this name change?

    Thanks,

    kate

    Hi Kate,

Kansas is one of the fonts whose name changed. The transition to the new version is happening right this moment, so the families are hidden temporarily. You should be able to access the font after the weekend. I apologize for the inconvenience!

    Best regards,

Hi I am about to release guidelines on a new brand we are working on and I would like to avoid releasing with a aname of font that is going to change. Can we get the new name of the font to include in the guidelines?
This will cause a lot of uneccessary work to change and update globally but if I can at least reference the change and new name in the guidelines then we can mitigate any issues at time of guideline release.

    Kind regards

Hi Sue – As I mentioned above, the only change is that fonts that end in New now begin with New. The names listed in the announcement are the new names.

So this might be a stupid question, but by the time I run across a previous project that will flag these fonts as missing, I might not remember this announcement. So will the new names be similar enough to the old names? That is --- these names are changing *from* what *to* what?
