Smallcaps in Caecilia LT Pro not working in InDesign, is there a solution?

When I use Caecilia LT Pro in InDesign, it is not possible to use small caps, allthough they cán be found in the Glyphs panel. So it is possible to ‘type’ a word by double-clicking on the small caps in the glyphs panel, but changing text to small caps in the usual way does not work.

I suppose it is because the small capitals in this font have not been assigned the right unicode, e.g. the small capital A has unicode E005 (private use aerea) while in other fonts, (e.g. the PMNCaeciliaSans Text) this letter is under unicode 0041

Can something be done about this? Or is there another way to be able to use them? Because it is a shame that the small caps cannot be used properly because they are very nicely designed!

I investigated here, and I concluded that we’re dealing with a font problem.

Caecilia does indeed follow some outdated notions (the PUA code points are only one indicator) – thanks for digging, @FriedSpark!

As we can see here, Caecilia supports ligatures and small caps:

The problem we’re dealing with is that Caecilia also supports a locl feature for the Dutch language.

This feature substitutes the sequence ij by an atomic ij character in Dutch only (see language setting in the right column, and resulting glyph names in the left column):

While this is a questionable substution to start with, this feature unfortunately has been implemented in a way that it “blocks” the execution of any other feature (see ligature above, Small Caps active below):

I also found out that Adobe Fonts is serving Caecilia Version 1.000, while the version available on MyFonts is 2.000.
I think a font update may solve this problem.

Thanks for figuring it out Frank, is Adobe going to update the font now? and can someone find out if this bug was actually fixed in the 2.0 version of Caecilia?

While I can’t make any promises, I think you can expect both.

I think the only way the fonts can be fixed is by moving the glyphs to the correct Unicode locations. That might be possible by using a font editing application. The commercial apps (FontLab Studio, Glyphs, etc) aren't cheap. I don't know how good a job the free/open source font editors can do with importing and altering existing fonts. FontForge and Birdfont are a couple of the free font editing apps.

Outside of that, it might worth contacting Monotype and telling them about the glyph assignment error. Monotype acquired Linotype in 2006. It is common for type foundries to update fonts, either to fix bugs or add more features to them.

Monotype Customer Service anwered to me:

Upon replicating in our end, the font seems to working fine as expected. Please try to contact to the Adobe for this, as the fonts we license to Adobe may vary from the ones that we offer directly on our portal.

So it looks like I am being sent from pillar to post...

Does anyone have the same issues with Caecilia LT Pro from Adobe Fonts or am I the only one?

    Hi there,

Sorry for the delay in responding. We would like to know if you're still experiencing the issue, and if yes, a few more details from you would be helpful for us to investigate.

    • Does the font work fine on other Adobe apps or any non-Adobe apps?
    • Can you share a screen recording of the issue?

We will try our best to help.

    Thanks,

    Harshika
