Character Animator file gets stuck in the encoding process

My student has exported his character animator into Media encoder.  He pressed the green arrow button to start the encoding process and it just gets stuck.  The encoding process seems to start but there's no progress.  After an hour or so, he just has to give up.  Any ideas?

    It's done this to me as well, more times than I can count and many wasted hours.  Sometimes sound doesn't transfer over either, for no reason.  When the encoding process takes over 2 hours on a large file, it's very aggravating to see these kinds of bugs (especially when you're close to the end and don't know if you should give up and try again).
