"Make sure file exists with correct permissions"

I keep getting this message when trying to add .AVI files into Adobe Media Encoder to transcode them to ProRes 4444. Is this message popping up because they are files proprietary to Microsoft (I am using a Mac) or does it have something to do with the drive permissions? This harddrive was given to me by a VFX artist who probably has the drive formatted for Windows. Does anybody know how to solve this issue?
