Media Encoder H.264 videos rendering out but freezes when playing (2021)

Hi,

I seem to be experiencing a problem whereby Media Encoder allows me to render and export using H.264, but the video playback (using VLC/Preview/Quicktime and other computers I've tested on) freezes 3/4 of the way through the video. The same issue seems to be happening on all files I try to export from different projects and only for H.264 exports – mpeg, mov etc seem to play back as they should do, without issues.

I have also attempted to export .mov and then convert to H.264 after and the issue still seems to be happening.

Is anybody else experiencing this issue? Or know what the issue may be?

Thanks in advance.

Computer used:
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
Big Sur 11.2.3

3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

All Adobe CC apps up-to-date to 2021 versions.

Hi all,

We're sorry for the experience. Did you check the playback in Premiere Pro after export?

Does it happen only with H.264 export? Could you share the original properties of the media(format, resolution, frame rate, etc)?

We'll get this checked.

Regards,

Shivangi

You won’t believe this but I think I figured it out—it was just a corrupt preference file:

clean uninstall of AME of last version that worked for me it was 15.0 (build 37) making sure to delete all preferences.
updating that version to current version.
still works reimporting earlier prefence files.

Let me know if you can replicate this, everything seems to be working normally now—but still testing.

It stopped working!! I think the workaround is the best option unless Adobe can fix in a future update.

Are either of you using Red Giant plugins? Looking for a common denominator.

Anyway I like to render HEVC (H.265) comps for approvals/drafts from AME, and then use Handbrake as a workaround to go from ProRes to H.264. It's a little annoying but doable.

My Workaround:
Just export as a good old MPEG2 with High Bitrate.

Issue has been resolved with version Media Encoder Version 15.1 update. Cheers Adobe!

Likewise! I managed to get a couple of renders through and now I'm experiencing the same issue again. Currently using the workaround I posted above. Not ideal.

Update: I've seen others are also experiencing the same issue with H.264 on ME Version 15.0.

I'm currently doing a workaround by exporting to Quicktime MOV and then using Media Encoder 2020 to convert to H.264 mp4. Annoying but works for now until the issue gets fixed.
